Interview #4 Amanda K. Campbell

Amanda R Kaczmarek recently changed her name to Campbell in honor of her recent marriage.

What was your experience like with TBW?

I loved it! It was so inspirational to see the images of the other women, as well as interesting to see how they saw themselves at that moment in time. It lent a deeper sense of intimacy between me and the collaborators I knew personally, as well.

What was the inspiration for your images?

For many years, I've played the role of martyr and supportive helper, and didn't "allow" myself to feel either angry or particularly powerful in a non-sexual way. (Not that those two feelings are necessarily related.) Part of the inspiration of my images was a freeing both of my sovereign power and of allowing for a constructive and creative release of anger.

What did you learn about yourself from the experience?

For one thing, that I'm pretty handy with a camera! I also learned that I feel more free and complete when I "allow" myself both time and space to simply feel what I'm feeling. As a writer, I sometimes tend to explain myself too much. With photographs, I don't need to explain...I simply AM.

Do you feel you are in the same state of mind as when you started?

Not exactly, but I feel I am better able to acknowledge and communicate my authority and power both to myself and to others. We live in a time of image-saturated pop culture, so seeing an image of yourself exemplifying your concept of power (or vulnerability, love, anguish, ennui, joy, etc.) is, in itself, a very powerful thing.

What advice would you give to those wanting to take their own portraits?

Remember that it's normal to take 100 pictures and be pleased with only one or two. Play with camera settings. Play music. Get props. I found that many of my better pictures happened when I was moving, instead of posing in a static position; try it out!
