OUT FEBRUARY 2010

THE SILK CITY SERIES is a short story collection by Eric Nelson.

THE SILK CITY SERIES pulls readers into the everyday lives of working-class residents of Paterson, New Jersey. Originally published serially in Nelson’s acclaimed zine—Silk City Series—this collection presents a diverse cross-section of characters based on the author’s own childhood neighbors. The stories capture a post-industrial city in a state usually not known for its beauty. In the heart of a city, where wealth lies in the surrounding suburbs, neighbors live on top of each other. Families struggle to stick together. Most find solace in each other. And the city, a character in itself, changes all who reside in its boundaries.

Some people are still getting things to me, and I won't be able to look at the materials until then anyway.

This project aims to honor Lilith by recognizing Her many facets and faces, both historically and in modern practice. She is the untamed feminine, the wise counselor, the grieving mother, the shifting hermaphrodite, the first woman, and the sacred dominatrix. Perhaps because of Her complexity, it seems that She is making her presence known to more and more unsuspecting folk in recent years.

The first chapter of the book will attempt to collect and organize references to Lilith in various cultural lore and practice (Mesopotamia, Sumeria, Judaism, Kabbalah, folk tradition, and modern Western occultism). The majority of the book, however, will consist of devotional material and reflections from those who have experienced Her.

I am currently accepting rituals, poems, essays, songs, and other original material for this volume. The book already has a publisher (Knickerbocker Circus Press) and should be available in the early part of 2010.
About the Author:

Eric Nelson, 25, was born and raised in a blue-collar suburb of northern New Jersey, the son of a nurse and machinist. In his teenage years, he found solace in the punk rock subculture and became involved in radical politics, the art of zine making, and a strong local music scene that often extended to New York City. He began writing fiction while an undergraduate at Ramapo College of New Jersey, a public college tucked away in the Ramapo Mountains. Upon graduating college, he moved to Boston in search of a job in non-profit fundraising and began working for a domestic violence non-profit organization. After a short period of time spent there, he moved to Brooklyn, where he began to seriously write short fiction and continue to work for non-profits. In May of 2009, he published his first zine in years as a series of short stories known as “The Silk City Series.”

He also became involved in the art scenes of the Lower East Side and Williamsburg, Brooklyn as a volunteer zine librarian at the art/activist space ABC No Rio, as well as an arts administrator at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, a non-profit gallery. What began as a way to grieve over the death of a parent turned into something bigger.

Individual stories have been distributed to passers-by at coffee houses, and art spaces, such as the 3rd Ward Artist Co-op in Brooklyn; and have also been sold at various festivals, through the website etsy.com and in bookstores such as Bluestockings Radical Bookstore and Wooden Shoe Books in Philadelphia. In addition to The Silk City Series, he has written numerous essays and articles published in several magazines including upcoming issues of “Constellation” as well as the self-published “Cup and Saucer Chronicles” zine, which was favorably reviewed in the October 2009 issue of Maximum Rocknroll magazine.
